Wiley and his four siblings were raised in the Conant Garden neighborhood of Detroit, Michigan. He was co-captain and played with Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Spencer Haywood and NBA great Ralph Simpson on his Pershing High School state championship basketball team. He is a lifelong educator, teaching, training, developing, and coaching students for over 40 years.
He attended Trinidad Jr. College, where he broke the single-season basketball assist record, averaging eight per game. After spending the next year and a half at the University of Detroit, he transferred to Regis College (now Regis University), where he was a two-year starter on the basketball team and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree. He later accepted a tryout with the Seattle Supersonics. After that experience, he enrolled and graduated with a Master’s degree from the University of Washington.
The next five years were spent at Everett Community College in Everett, Washington, as Coordinator of the Intramural and Recreational Program before he was promoted to athletic director and men’s basketball coach. His teams qualified for the playoffs four out of five years as head coach.
Wiley moved to Phoenix, Arizona, after Everett, where he began working at South Mountain Community College as head men’s basketball coach and Director of Cooperative Education before being hired as Director of Student Activities. After ten years at South Mountain, he transferred to GateWay Community College, serving as Director of Student Life and Leadership and adjunct Sociology faculty member. He was later selected as head men’s golf coach. Wiley would later serve as the TRIO Program Director at GateWay (Student Support Services and Upward Bound), a federally funded program providing academic support to first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities.
Wiley served as chairman of the George Gervin Prep Academy Advisory Board and Chairman of the Gervin Prep Academy in Phoenix for two years. He also served as an executive member of the Spencer Haywood Non-Profit Foundation in Las Vegas.
The foundation’s mission is to support nonprofits pursuing social justice initiatives and organizations that provide health counseling, educational welfare, and sports development opportunities in marginalized communities. Wiley volunteered for thirty years as a classroom facilitator with Career Concepts for Youth, a 6th-grade Stay-In-School and Achieve Program in Phoenix, Arizona.
Working with students across all segments of college life was satisfying and rewarding. It was equally gratifying to impact so many students’ lives and watch them grow and develop.
Wiley maintains an active fitness lifestyle. He enjoys writing and keeping his golf ball in the fairway several days a week. He lives in a retirement community with his wife, Roberta, in Marana, Arizona.
